I asked Lauren to write about her experience doing a boudoir session at my studio in Kansas City and she graciously said yes! She has such a wonderful perspective on life and doing the boudoir experience.
What frustrations or hesitations were you experiencing when looking for a boudoir photographer?
“Finding someone that captured the natural beauty of the person was an initial challenge because I noticed most photographers heavily photoshopped their clients. This was concerning as I was really hoping to go with someone who utilized natural lighting and highlighted people’s unique bodies shapes and types. I also struggled with navigating photographer’s sites and social media. Pricing seemed very elusive and difficult to locate without having a consultation. I wanted to know up front what the investment would be, without already having set my heart on someone (just in case I couldn’t afford it).”
What made you decide to book with me?
“Looking at your site I felt at ease because it was very well structured, plain language and upfront about pricing/investment. I also cracked up reading some of the dialogue because it felt like I was reading my own words, it was clear that we had a similar conversation style and I was drawn to that easy going humor and genuine approachability. “
Now that you’ve had a session, how would you describe the experience?
“Overall, I had an incredible experience. I went through a weight loss journey and as it was coming to an end I had my session, so I was feeling apprehensive and a little self conscious. I wasn’t sure how my body would look in photos or if I would connect with the professionals. As soon as I arrived I relaxed and immediately felt at home. I appreciated the positive energy from both Emily and the stylist (terrible with names omg) and most importantly I felt they listened to what I wanted and weren’t upset when I asked for some changes. I started the session feeling confident and empowered as they both clearly cared about my experience and me feeling comfortable and beautiful in my own skin. Emily and I ended up cracking up, talking about deep life issues and broaching random topics throughout my session. It made the time feel like two friends hanging out which was relaxing and the time went by really quickly. I was also really impressed with how Emily positioned my body. Everyone out there feels awkward with knowing what to do with your hands and feet, facial expressions…etc…but she had very specific suggestions and even if they felt awkward at times, they looked striking and highlighted my body in the ways I was hoping. I also really loved being able to pick my photos and photo book before leaving the studio! I was even more excited when I left because I knew exactly what I was getting. Within days I received all my pictures and my app and was able to share it with my family/friends and post on my social media, really contributing to my excitement and increased self esteem :).”
What would you say to someone on the fence considering a boudoir session?
“I would tell that person to think about having an experience where they could have the opportunity to change any negative feelings regarding their body image. To think about what it might be like to create a new narrative for themselves where they are confident, desirable, self assured and inspirational. That’s what an experience like this can do for you. You can see yourself through a new lens (pun intended…hehe) and start to shed whatever negative body dysmorphic thoughts and beliefs have been consuming you. This is an opportunity to feel strong, be brave and be 100% yourself. “
